Simple, Fresh, Modern

More and more people are aware of the benefits of a varied modern diet. The 2019 Canada’s Food Guide reflects the trend towards including plant-based foods in your diet. Based on the latest nutritional science, the guide recommends eating a higher proportion of plant-based foods.

Canada’s Dietary Guidelines, 2019

Getting the benefits of plant-based foods into your diet can be simple! Here’s how:

1) INCLUDE MORE PLANT-BASED PROTEINS ON YOUR GROCERY LIST

Getting started with plant-based eating can be as simple as taking a trip to the grocery store to look for new ingredients and incorporating them into your meal planning. The variety of plant-based foods on the market is expanding beyond the traditional and many products are simple to use in the recipes you already love: think vegetarian sausages and burgers, dairy-free beverages, spreads and vegan cheese. Stroll through your regular grocery store and you’ll find an abundance of exciting plant protein choices to enrich your everyday diet.

2) TRY NEW RECIPES CENTERED ON PLANT-BASED INGREDIENTS

Plant-based cookbooks and food blogs are exploding in popularity. Explore their recipes to help you create nutritious meals that use plant-based products as main ingredients—and that taste delicious. Many of Plant-Based Foods of Canada’s members have created their own plant-based cookbooks. Their recipes are the perfect place to seek inspiring ways to prepare plant-based foods for your everyday meals.

3) MAKE YOUR MONDAYS MEATLESS

Scientific studies have shown that including more plant-based foods in your diet is good for your health, and good for the environment. Across the world, people are participating in Meatless Mondays, going vegetarian on the first day of each week in order to lessen their consumption of meat. The 2019 Canada’s Food Guide recommends eating more plant-based foods as replacing animal proteins with plant-based proteins may help to decrease the amount of saturated fat in your diet. Using fewer animal-derived products also helps conserve water, air, and soil, which can have important environmental benefits too.
